Olympique Lyon History

Olympique de Lyon was initially formed under the multi-sports club Lyon Olympique Universitaire in the late 19th century. The football club became its own entity in 1950, adopting the name Olympique Lyonnais.

OL won the Coupe de France (French Cup) for the first time in 1964 and then captured the trophy again three years later. Further successes followed in 1973, 2008 and 2012. The club's maiden league title only came much later in 2002. Lyon certainly made up for lost time, remarkably winning the French top flight seven years in a row.

It was also around this time Les Gones reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in three consecutive seasons. OL were knocked out by eventual champions FC Porto in the 2003/04 campaign, 4-2 on aggregate. The following year Lyon lost to Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven after the sides couldn't be separated over two legs.

Then, in 2006, Lyon suffered a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan at the San Siro following a goalless draw at the Stade de Gerland. The second leg seemed destined for extra-time before Filippo Inzaghi and Andriy Shevchenko both found the back of the net for Milan in the closing stages.

Olympique Lyon Today

OL have failed to celebrate Ligue 1 honours since 2008, though they have managed to finish as runners-up on multiple occasions. On the European stage, Lyon advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals in the 2016/17 campaign but narrowly lost to Ajax, 5-4 on aggregate.

Lyon made it to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019/20, thanks to a stunning 3-1 victory over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the quarter-finals. Lyon had earlier overcome Italian giants Juventus via the away-goal rule in the Round of 16, but ultimately lost to Bayern Munich in the last-four.

Les Gones reached the Coupe de France final in 2024, marking the first time in 12 years the club featured on this stage.

Since 2016 Lyon have played home matches at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, currently known as the Groupama Stadium for commercial reasons. This modern arena has a capacity just below 60,000 and it was used as a venue for the Euro 2016 tournament as well as the 2018 Europa League final.

Lyon had previously played at the 25,000-seater Stade de Gerland since the club's formation in 1950 until 2015.
